You know what struck me first about Thavorn Palm Beach Resort Phuket? It’s actually tucked away on Karon Beach in a spot where you can hear the waves but escape the worst of the tourist chaos that hits Patong. I mean, don’t get me wrong – this five-star place definitely attracts its share of visitors, but there’s something about the way it’s positioned along the shoreline that feels more… I don’t know, authentic maybe?

The resort spreads across these terraced gardens that cascade down toward the beach, and honestly, the landscaping here is pretty impressive. They’ve got these massive palm trees (hence the name, obviously) and tropical plants everywhere, but it doesn’t feel overdone like some places in Phuket where they’re trying too hard. The pools – there are several of them – are integrated into the natural slope of the property, so you get these different levels with varying views of the Andaman Sea. What I really appreciated was how they managed to create quiet corners even when the place was fairly busy. You can find a spot by one of the smaller pools or in the garden areas where it’s just you and the sound of water trickling somewhere nearby.

The rooms themselves are spacious, especially if you spring for one of the suites with a sea view. Pro tip though – even the garden view rooms are pretty nice, and you’ll save some money that you can spend on the excellent spa treatments or those cocktails at the beach bar. Speaking of the beach, Karon is one of the better stretches of sand on the island, and the resort’s section feels relatively private despite being a public beach technically. The water’s usually calm enough for swimming, and you’re close enough to walk into Karon town for dinner if you want something beyond the resort restaurants – though honestly, their Thai restaurant is solid, and the breakfast spread is one of those deals where you might skip lunch entirely. Just be aware that like most beach resorts here, things can get a bit crowded during high season (December through March), and you’ll want to claim your beach chair early if you’re picky about positioning.
