I’ll be honest – when I first walked up to Sun Hill Hotel Patong, I wasn’t expecting much from a three-star place in this part of Phuket. But you know what? Sometimes the best surprises come in unassuming packages, and this little spot actually won me over pretty quickly.

The thing about Patong is that it can feel overwhelming with all the neon and noise, but this hotel sits just far enough back from the main Bangla Road chaos that you can actually sleep at night. I mean, you’ll still hear the distant thump of music if you’re a light sleeper, but it’s not like having a nightclub in your bedroom. The staff here really gets it – they understand that most people staying in Patong want to be close to the action but not drowning in it 24/7. Check-in was surprisingly smooth too, none of that standing around forever while they hunt for your reservation thing that happens at bigger places.

What really struck me about the rooms was how clean everything felt. Look, I’ve stayed in plenty of budget-friendly spots in Thailand, and sometimes you’re rolling the dice on whether the sheets will smell like cigarettes or if the shower will actually have hot water. Here though, housekeeping clearly takes pride in their work – the bathroom was spotless, and honestly, the bed was way more comfortable than I expected. The air conditioning actually works properly too, which if you’ve spent any time in Thailand during hot season, you know that’s not always a given. There’s this little balcony situation in some rooms where you can sit with your morning coffee and people-watch, which I found myself doing more than I planned to. The WiFi reaches out there too, so you can catch up on messages without being stuck inside.

Location-wise, you’re maybe a seven-minute walk to the beach, which means you avoid the inflated prices right on the sand but you’re not hiking for twenty minutes with your beach gear either. There’s this great little local restaurant around the corner – I think it’s on Soi Kebsab – where the pad thai is incredible and costs about half what you’d pay closer to the water. The hotel folks actually told me about it, which I appreciated since they could’ve just pointed me toward the tourist spots. You’ve got a 7-Eleven practically next door for all those random things you inevitably need, and getting a tuk-tuk or taxi from here is never a problem.

I stayed here during shoulder season, so it wasn’t completely packed, but talking to other guests, it seems like the vibe stays pretty relaxed even when they’re full. The pool area is small but clean, and it’s actually nice for a quick dip when you’re too lazy to walk to the beach. Honestly, for what you’re paying and where you are, Sun Hill delivers on the basics really well. It’s not trying to be something fancy – it’s just a solid, comfortable place to crash while you explore everything Patong has to offer. Sometimes that’s exactly what you need.
