Look, when I first walked into Ratana Hotel Sakdidet in Phuket Town, I’ll be honest – it’s not going to blow you away with flashy lobbies or infinity pools. But you know what? Sometimes that’s exactly what you need. This three-star spot has this no-nonsense vibe that actually grew on me pretty quickly, especially when I realized how much money I was saving compared to those beachfront places that charge you extra just for existing.

The thing about staying in Phuket Town versus the beach areas is that you get to see how locals actually live – and this hotel puts you right in the thick of it. I mean, step outside and you’re literally surrounded by those colorful Sino-Portuguese shophouses that everyone posts on Instagram, except here you’re not fighting crowds of tourists to get a decent photo. The morning sounds are pretty authentic too – vendors setting up their stalls, scooters buzzing by, the occasional temple bell. Sure, the rooms aren’t huge and the air conditioning has that familiar Thai hotel hum (you know the one), but everything’s clean and functional. The shower actually had decent water pressure, which honestly surprised me given the price point.

What really won me over was the location for exploring the old town properly. You can walk to the weekend market in like five minutes, and those amazing local coffee shops on Thalang Road are practically next door. The staff – well, they’re not going to anticipate your every need, but they’re genuinely helpful when you ask. One guy at the front desk gave me directions to this tiny noodle place that I never would’ve found otherwise, and it ended up being one of my best meals on the island. The hotel doesn’t have a pool or fancy restaurant, but there’s something refreshing about a place that just focuses on being a decent, affordable base. I actually slept better here than at some of the fancier resorts I’ve stayed at – maybe because there’s no pool parties or beach bars keeping you up all night. If you’re the type who spends most of your day out exploring anyway, this place makes a lot of sense.

  My husband and I stayed at Ratana for three weeks. The staff was very nice and always happy to help. We loved the large bed in our room and the fact that we stayed on the 5th floor, as it meant no snakes or other animals could get into the room. There’s also a 7/11 just a three-minute walk from the hotel.

  Nice big room with balcony. Quiet in the side road. Good aircon. Good fridge and there was a hot water contraption. Good shower. One lady (in orange) very friendly and helpful and her English was better than the others. She rented us a moped at the hotel (250THB/day) and also arranged our trip to Koh Phi Phi. The pool was a welcome distraction and use of the toaster and microwave in the adjacent room was useful for lunch. No restaurant while we were there. Not touristy but we like to experience local life and we ate well at a small place nearby and we'd recommend the Steak Tonight restaurant too.
