You know what really caught me off guard about Quip Bed & Breakfast? The name made me think it was going to be some quirky, overly-themed place with pun-filled decorations everywhere, but honestly, it’s just a really solid three-star spot that doesn’t try too hard. I mean, there are little touches of humor here and there – the breakfast menu has some cheeky descriptions and the guest book is full of genuinely funny comments – but it’s not beating you over the head with forced whimsy like some places do.

The rooms are what I’d call comfortably unpretentious. Mine had this great old wooden floor that creaked just enough to feel authentic without being annoying, and the bed was actually one of those situations where you sink in just right – not too soft, not like sleeping on concrete. The owners clearly put thought into the little things that matter when you’re traveling. Good reading lights (thank god), plenty of outlets where you actually need them, and the kind of thick towels that make you feel like splurging on your bathroom setup at home. I stayed during what seemed like a pretty busy period, but the walls must be decent because I never really heard other guests stomping around or having loud phone calls.

What really sets this place apart though is the breakfast situation – and I’m someone who usually just grabs coffee and runs. They’ve got this communal table setup that somehow manages to feel social without being awkward, probably because the hosts have this knack for reading the room. Some mornings people are chatting about their plans, other times everyone’s quietly doing their own thing, and both feel perfectly natural. The food itself is that perfect middle ground between fancy B&B fare and actual substance – really good coffee, eggs that taste like they came from happy chickens, and this homemade bread situation that had me going back for thirds. Plus they’re flexible with timing, which matters when you’re dealing with travel schedules that never go quite as planned. I honestly didn’t expect much from a place with such a punny name, but sometimes the best spots are the ones that surprise you by just getting the basics really, really right.

  This hotel is in an amazing location within walking distance from pretty much anything you could want to do in the old town.
  
  Great restaurants and cafes within a few minute walk away. Spots nearby for currency exchange and ATMs. The hotel also acts as a bar at night and has a restaurant on the rooftop too which was cool. We didn't venture up but could hear fireworks being set off for new years day!
  
  Note Phuket Old Town is a 45 minute drive from the airport, so be sure to book your ride in advance if you want a decent deal (we booked it through Booking.com and everything went exactly as according to plan).
