I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to the Phoenix Hotel Karon Beach, I wasn’t expecting much from what looked like a pretty standard four-star property. But you know what? Sometimes these mid-range places surprise you, and this one definitely grew on me during my stay.

The location is actually really solid if you’re the type who likes being close to the action without being right in the thick of it. You’re maybe a seven-minute walk from the main stretch of Karon Beach, which means you skip most of the tourist chaos but can still grab a late-night pad thai from the street vendors when you want to. The pool area – and this is where the hotel really shines – has this laid-back vibe that I found myself gravitating toward every afternoon. It’s not huge, but it’s got enough space that you’re not fighting for a decent chair, even during high season. The water’s always clean, which honestly isn’t something you can take for granted at every hotel in this price range.

What I really appreciated was how the staff seemed to actually remember faces after a day or two. The guy at the front desk (I think his name was Niran?) always had solid recommendations for local spots that weren’t just the typical tourist traps. He pointed me toward this little seafood place about ten minutes down the road that became my go-to dinner spot – the kind of find that makes a trip memorable. The rooms themselves are pretty standard fare, nothing fancy but clean and comfortable enough. The air conditioning works well, which matters more than you’d think when you’re dealing with Phuket’s humidity. I will say the walls are a bit thin though, so if you’re a light sleeper and end up next to a family with kids, well… just pack some earplugs.

The breakfast spread is decent – not going to win any awards, but there’s enough variety to keep you happy for a few days. Fresh fruit is always good, and they make a surprisingly solid omelet if you ask nicely. I mean, for a 7.7-rated place, my expectations weren’t sky-high going in, but I left feeling like I got good value for what I paid. It’s the kind of hotel where you spend your days out exploring anyway, but when you come back tired and maybe a little sunburned, everything just works the way it should. The wifi is reliable, the shower has decent pressure, and there’s always cold beer available at the little bar by the pool. Sometimes that’s all you really need.

  The Phoenix is a modern and comfortable hotel. The rooms were a good size and well appointed. The bathrooms were well laid out. Everything was well stocked and cleaned daily.
  The location is great. An easy drive to get over to the activities in Phuket town. We were outside of the madness that is Patong beach. Karon beach is plenty large enough that anything you are looking for is in easy walking distance.
  Oh yeah, there are two 7-elevens within spitting distance of the hotel.
