I had this one front desk guy who kept recommending these tiny local spots that I never would’ve found otherwise, including this incredible som tam place tucked behind the 7-Eleven that locals go to. The rooms themselves are clean and comfortable without being fancy – good air conditioning (crucial in Phuket, obviously), decent water pressure, and beds that don’t leave you waking up sore. The 8.3 rating makes total sense to me because it’s the kind of place that doesn’t wow you with marble lobbies or infinity pools, but delivers on all the basics really well.

What I really appreciated was how quiet it gets at night – you can actually sleep with the windows open if you want to hear the ocean breeze, which is something you can’t say about a lot of places in touristy areas. The location puts you right in that sweet spot where you can walk to some genuinely good restaurants (there’s this family-run Thai place about five minutes away that does the best massaman curry I had on the entire trip), but you’re not paying resort prices for everything.
