Look, I’ll be honest with you – when I first pulled up to On The Hill Karon Resort, I wasn’t expecting much from a three-star place. But you know what? Sometimes these smaller properties surprise you in the best way possible. The name says it all really – this place is literally perched on one of those rolling hills that overlook Karon Beach, and the views are actually pretty spectacular once you get to your room.

The thing about staying in Karon is that you’re getting that proper beach vibe without the absolute chaos of Patong (thank god), and this resort sits in this sweet spot where you can walk down to the beach in maybe ten minutes, but you’re elevated enough to catch those evening breezes. I mean, the pool area is nothing fancy – it’s smallish and gets crowded during peak afternoon hours – but there’s something really pleasant about floating around up there while you can see the Andaman Sea stretching out below. The staff here actually remember your name after a day or two, which sounds small but honestly makes such a difference when you’re trying to relax.

What really won me over was the practical stuff that matters when you’re actually living somewhere for a week. The rooms are clean – properly clean, not just surface-level tourist clean – and the air conditioning works without sounding like a freight train. The Wi-Fi is decent enough for video calls back home, and there’s this little convenience store right at the bottom of the hill where you can grab snacks and water without paying resort prices. The breakfast isn’t going to win any awards, but they do a solid job with fresh fruit and decent coffee, plus there’s always pad thai available which, let’s face it, is what you want anyway. Sure, the bathrooms are a bit dated and the walls aren’t exactly soundproof, but for the price point you’re looking at – especially compared to those massive chain hotels closer to the beach – it’s really hard to complain. If you’re the type who wants to actually experience a bit of local Phuket life instead of being locked away in some sterile resort bubble, this place gets it right.

  – I had a room with a sea view, the entire beach could be seen from the balcony, the property being located on a hill at one end of the beach;

  The views are amazing, thats the biggest selling point, its also great to have direct path to the beach, and also the restaurant make great food! You have enough in there to keep busy in this hotel. And very friendly staff:)

  Lovely staff. And a fantastic location with incredible views over the beach and a short stroll down steps onto the best part of the beach too (quiet and tranquil with a beach bar). Short taxi ride into the main town where we went each evening. The restaurant was great – we had breakfast each morning which was fabulous. Had we stayed longer, we would have tried a dinner there too.
