Marriott’s Mai Khao Resort – Phuket Overview

Look, I’ve stayed at a lot of resorts in Thailand, but Marriott’s Mai Khao Resort – Phuket honestly surprised me in ways I wasn’t expecting. When you first pull up to this five-star property, it doesn’t hit you with that over-the-top lobby grandeur some places do – instead, it’s got this understated elegance that actually feels more luxurious, you know? The thing that got me right away was how they’ve managed to sprawl across this massive stretch of Mai Khao Beach without making it feel like a concrete jungle. I mean, you’re literally on the same beach where planes from the airport come swooping overhead every so often, but somehow that adds to the charm rather than detracting from it.

What really sets this place apart is how they’ve nailed the villa concept – and I’m talking proper villas here, not just fancy hotel rooms with a different name. Each one comes with its own pool, which sounds standard until you’re actually floating in your private water at sunset with a Chang beer, watching the sky turn those impossible shades of orange over the Andaman Sea. The kitchens are actually functional too, which matters if you’re staying more than a few days or traveling with kids who get tired of restaurant food. I picked up some fresh seafood from the local market near Nai Yang village (about a 10-minute ride) and grilled it on my villa’s outdoor setup – honestly one of the best meals I had in Phuket. The staff doesn’t hover, but they’re always around when you need them, and they know the island well enough to point you toward the good local spots instead of just the tourist traps.

The beach situation here is what really sold me though. Mai Khao is this long, relatively undeveloped stretch where you can actually walk for miles without dodging jet skis and banana boats every five minutes. Sure, it’s not as sheltered as some of the southern beaches, so the waves can get a bit choppy during monsoon season, but that also means fewer crowds and more of that authentic tropical feeling. The resort’s beach service is solid – they’ll set you up with umbrellas and bring drinks right to your chair – but you can also just wander down to quieter sections where it’s basically just you and the occasional local fisherman. Pool-wise, there’s a main lagoon-style setup that works great for families, plus all those private villa pools I mentioned. The spa is tucked back in the gardens and actually feels like a retreat rather than just another hotel amenity. Fair warning though – this place books up solid during high season (December through March), and while the villas are spacious, the resort itself can feel busy when it’s full. But honestly, with that 9.0 rating, there’s a reason people keep coming back.

Upon arrival the staff could not do more for my family. The room was exceptional and the facilities were great. The kids club activities are so good.

  • Bobo from Singapore (9/10)

Wifi unstable and laggy when screencast.
Wish there are more channels such as HBO or Netflix where we can sign in.
Breakfast place was not nice, and hot as there is no aircon.
But the staff are friendly. Especially room service staff who will set up your table when brought in the food.
Love the rooms as our place is spacious, very cozy and well facilitated. Except sofa bed is not flexible enough to open to sleep and close when not needed.

  • Scott from New Zealand (9/10)

    Fantastic kids club

  • Aline from United Kingdom (9/10)

How wonderful to enjoy the beauties of Phuket from the most comfortable and stylish base of your own private appartment. We enjoyed the autonomy that having our own kitchen afforded. The facilities were perfect, the appartment very spacious and furnished with everything we needed to cook and eat by ourselves. It was lovely to mix and match with the delicous restaurants offer on site and nearby. The little Turtle Village close by was very convenient to provide whatever supplies we needed.

  • Kimberly from Singapore (9/10)

It is a cozy size with wonderful activities to keep the kids 6 and 8 occupied. There’s even have activities for adults.

Breakfast is excellent. And our room at the ground floor is excellent for accessing the pool area.

  • Diana from United Arab Emirates (9/10)

We’ve been coming to this resort the past 15 years.
It’s well maintained and everything is like new. Turtle village has grown and there are a lot of restaurants and coffee shops within walking distance. The staff are amazing. Everyone that works there is genuinely happy and nice. Please don’t book anywhere else in Phuket. This is the place to stay. 100% worth the money.
