You know what honestly surprised me about Malaiwana Residences? It’s one of those places where the photos actually undersell it – and I’m usually pretty skeptical about five-star properties that look too good to be true online. But walking into these villas for the first time, I mean, the space just opens up in this incredible way that makes you feel like you’ve stumbled into some sort of private compound rather than a hotel. The whole setup is really more like borrowing a ridiculously wealthy friend’s vacation home, complete with your own infinity pool that seems to spill right into the Andaman Sea.

What really got me was how they’ve managed to make everything feel so effortlessly luxurious without being stuffy about it. The staff – and I’m talking about people who genuinely seem to enjoy their jobs – they’ll set up your breakfast on the terrace overlooking the water, and you can honestly spend hours just watching the long-tail boats drift by. The villas themselves are massive, with these soaring ceilings and floor-to-ceiling windows that basically erase the line between indoor and outdoor living. I spent way too much time in that outdoor bathtub, but honestly, when else are you going to get the chance? The kitchen is fully equipped too, which actually comes in handy because while the in-villa dining is incredible, sometimes you just want to grab some local fruit from the market and eat it by your pool without having to get dressed up.

The location is pretty brilliant – tucked away enough that you feel completely secluded (the sound of waves is basically your only soundtrack), but you’re still close enough to explore when you want to venture out. I’d definitely rent a scooter if you’re comfortable with that, because the surrounding area has some hidden gems that are worth the short ride. The whole experience feels indulgent in the best possible way, and with that 8.9 rating, I can see why people keep coming back. Fair warning though – it’s going to spoil you for pretty much every other beach accommodation out there.
