You know what? Keemala is one of those places that completely catches you off guard – and I mean that in the best possible way. I’ll be honest, when I first heard about these “bird’s nest” villas perched in the Phuket rainforest, I was skeptical. It sounded a bit too gimmicky for my taste. But walking through those jungle paths for the first time, hearing nothing but cicadas and distant waves, I got it immediately. This five-star retreat isn’t trying to be a typical beach resort – it’s doing something entirely different, and honestly, it works brilliantly.

The accommodations here are… well, they’re unlike anything I’ve stayed in before. Each villa is designed around these fantastical concepts – some look like massive clay pots nestled in the trees, others resemble elaborate treehouses that seem to grow right out of the canopy. I stayed in one of the “Birds Nest” villas, and climbing up to the bedroom felt like being a kid again, except with Egyptian cotton sheets and a view that stretches all the way to the Andaman Sea. The attention to detail is pretty remarkable – hand-carved furniture, rain showers that actually make you want it to storm, and these incredible infinity pools that seem to disappear into the jungle below. What I really appreciated was how quiet everything stays despite being reasonably close to the main tourist areas. You’re maybe fifteen minutes from the chaos of Patong if you want it, but up here in the hills, it’s just you and the hornbills.

The spa treatments lean heavily into traditional Thai wellness – they use a lot of indigenous herbs and techniques that you won’t find at your average hotel spa. I tried this “Keemala Signature” massage that incorporated singing bowls and honestly wasn’t sure what to expect, but left feeling more relaxed than I had in months. The restaurant situation is solid too, though I’d recommend venturing down to some of the local spots in Kamala village for dinner at least once or twice. There’s this little seafood place right on the beach that the hotel staff pointed me toward – much more authentic than what you’ll get on the resort, and the prices will make you smile. Just be prepared for the winding drive back up the hill afterward, especially if you’ve had a Chang or two with dinner. The whole Keemala experience feels deliberately removed from typical resort life, which is exactly why it works so well if you’re looking to actually disconnect for a while.

  Breakfast was exceptional. It felt gourmet and had many options to choose from. The baked goods were amazing every morning. the Ala carte options were each delicious from the pancakes to the dim sum to the Indian crepe. Even the salmon Benedict was the best I’ve ever had. The bed in the room was the best bed I’ve ever slept in. The shower and the tub was very nice. Every part of the room felt like there was thought out into it. Also, since it was our honeymoon our villa assistant got us complimentary champagne !!and of course we enjoyed it in the tub for extra romance. 10/10 stay.
