The apartment itself feels more like staying at a friend’s place than a typical rental. The kitchen actually has proper equipment if you want to cook – I mean, real knives and pans, not those flimsy things you usually get. There’s this little balcony that catches the morning breeze perfectly, and I ended up having coffee out there every day watching the neighborhood wake up.

What really surprised me was how quiet everything gets after sunset. Mai Khao doesn’t have that non-stop party atmosphere, so you can actually relax and hear yourself think. The beach here is massive and way less crowded than the southern beaches – some days I felt like I had kilometers of sand practically to myself. Fair warning though: the waves can get pretty strong during certain times of year, so it’s more for walking and sunset watching than serious swimming. The location puts you close enough to the airport that you’re not spending your whole first day traveling, but far enough that plane noise isn’t really an issue. There’s a 7-Eleven about a ten-minute walk away for essentials, and a few family-run restaurants within easy distance where you can get excellent seafood for basically nothing. I actually found myself looking forward to coming back here each evening – it had that rare combination of being peaceful without feeling isolated, comfortable without being sterile. For the price point and that 9.0 rating from other guests, it makes total sense why this place books up during high season.
