Honestly, when I first pulled up to Chanalai Hillside Resort, Karon Beach, I wasn’t sure what to expect – the name sort of gives it away, but this place really does cling to the hillside in the most dramatic way. You wind up this steep little road (thankfully they have shuttle service because walking it with luggage would be brutal), and suddenly you’re looking down at all of Karon spread out below you like a postcard.

The thing about this four-star spot is that it gets the balance right between feeling secluded and actually being accessible. I mean, you’re technically removed from the beach chaos, but it’s maybe a ten-minute walk down to the sand – or you can catch their shuttle if you’re feeling lazy. What really got me was how they’ve built the whole place to work with the natural slope instead of fighting it. The infinity pool basically melts into the horizon, and honestly, I spent way too many mornings just floating there with a coffee, watching the long-tail boats dot the water way down below. The rooms – well, most of them anyway – have these massive windows that frame the Andaman Sea perfectly. You know what’s nice? They actually thought about the details. The bathrooms are bigger than you’d expect, there’s decent water pressure (not always a given in Thailand), and the air conditioning doesn’t sound like a helicopter landing.

Now, I’ll be straight with you – if you’re the type who wants to stumble directly from your hotel room onto the beach, this isn’t your spot. But if you appreciate that slight separation, especially when Karon gets crazy busy during high season, the elevated position becomes a real advantage. The restaurant terrace catches these incredible sunset views, and the staff genuinely seems to remember your name after a day or two. I noticed they’re particularly good with families – there’s enough space for kids to roam without bothering other guests, but it’s not overrun with screaming children either. The whole vibe feels more sophisticated than some of the beachfront places that can get pretty rowdy. Actually, one thing that surprised me was how quiet it gets at night – you’re just high enough to escape most of the street noise from the main Karon strip, but close enough that a quick tuk-tuk ride gets you into the action when you want it.

  Good location to Karon beach (but this beach has sea lice in the ocean). Room is really nice, cozy and comfortable. We booked one night then ended up staying 3 extra nights after that – all of which were wonderful. Staff is extremely kind and accommodating to the best of their ability. They require your key card to be put in for electricity so the AC turns off when you leave. However it is very well insulated and the AC units are awesome so it really didn’t bother us.

  The property is in a great location, close enough to Karon Beach, restaurants and nightlife and only a stones throw away from Patong. Staff were super friendly and attentive to all our needs. The rooftop pool is beautiful and happy hour at the bar is awesome value.
