You know what really caught me off guard about Banyan Tree Phuket? It’s how they managed to make a five-star resort feel intimate despite being absolutely massive. I mean, when you’re driving up that winding road through the hills above Bang Tao Beach, you’re not quite prepared for how this place sort of melts into the landscape rather than dominating it.

The villas here are honestly something else – each one feels like your own private compound tucked into the tropical hillside. I stayed in one of the lagoon pool villas (definitely worth the splurge if you can swing it), and from my deck, I could see both the Andaman Sea stretching endlessly westward and the lush green mountains rolling inland toward the center of Phuket. What I loved most was how quiet it gets in the evenings – you’re elevated enough that you escape most of the beach noise from Bang Tao below, but close enough that a quick shuttle ride gets you down to their beach club if you want that scene. The spa is where they really shine though, and I get why they’re famous for it. They’ve got these treatment pavilions scattered throughout the property, some literally built into the hillside with these incredible views. I had a massage at sunset once, and honestly, watching the sky turn pink over the ocean while getting worked on by someone who clearly knew what they were doing – well, it’s one of those travel moments you don’t forget.

Practically speaking, the place runs incredibly smoothly for somewhere this size. The staff seem to genuinely remember your name after a day or two (not just reading it off a card), and they’ve figured out the shuttle system to the beach and main areas so you never feel stranded up in your villa. The restaurants are solid – not groundbreaking, but the Thai place does this amazing green curry that’s actually spicy enough for locals, and their sunset cocktails at the main bar are perfectly executed without being overpriced for what you get. One thing to know is that you’re about 20 minutes from the craziness of Patong if that’s your scene, but you’re also close enough to some of Phuket’s better local spots – there’s this little seafood place down in Cherng Talay that the concierge recommended that ended up being one of our best meals. The only minor gripe I’d have is that some of the older villas could use a refresh (ask for one of the renovated ones when you book), and like most high-end places in Thailand, they tend to blast the AC pretty aggressively. But honestly, when you’re lounging by your private pool looking out over that view, with temple bells drifting up from the valley and the sound of waves in the distance – those seem like pretty minor complaints.
